HOW ABOUT SAMPLE RATE?

The latest audio interfaces sometimes have a sample rate up to 192 kHz and a bit depth of 24 bit. But is that what we need for recording?

For recording the best setting is 24 bit, which gives you higher dynamics and more headroom compared to 16 bit. You can record at lower levels and you do not have to worry too much about noise when boosting the signal.

The sample rate can best be set at 48 kHz, that gives you more quality than the 44.1 kHz that is used on a compact disc and will not really make the file sizes much bigger. If you use 88.2 kHz the audio file size will be twice as big as the 44.1 kHz.

You will probably not hear any difference using higher sample rates like 96 kHz or 192 kHz. But it will increase the file size of your computer and it will also make your computer work harder to manage this all.

Oh, and don't forget to check if they offer something like 48 V phantom power for your microphones. You really need that.
